With both heavy hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Cathy June Rice, who peacefully passed away on September 20, 2025, at Beehive Nursing Home in Levelland, Texas.
Born in Levelland on January 22, 1949, Cathy was the beloved daughter of Francis Aileen and Amil Veretto. She grew up in Levelland, attending Pettit Grade School and earning her high school diploma from Levelland High School in 1968. Afterward, Cathy earned a certificate as a nursing aide from South Plains College and dedicated herself to helping others.
In 1984, Cathy married the love of her life, Roy Rice. Together, they shared a deep and enduring bond until Roy’s passing in 2007. Cathy was a devoted wife and aunt, always making family a top priority. She had a remarkable ability to show up for those she loved, whether near or far, and made everyone feel special in her own unique way.
Cathy’s love for others extended far beyond her family. She was an active member of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, where she found great joy in her role within the Altar Society. She also touched many lives through her work at Goodwill. Her previous employment included roles in the school cafeteria, nursing homes, and Gibson's department store. Her kindness and dedication were felt by all who knew her.
A proud participant in the Special Olympics, Cathy found immense joy in swimming, running and track events, where her competitive spirit shone brightly. She also enjoyed gardening and spent many hours cultivating her favorite plants, creating a space of beauty around her home. Cathy had a special place in her heart for visiting nursing homes, offering companionship wherever she went.
Her hobbies also included reading, crocheting, caring for animals, and collecting Precious Moments figurines. Cathy was also known for always sending thoughtful cards to family and friends, often with a personal touch that brought smiles and laughter.
She is survived by her loving siblings: Eddie and Cheryl Veretto and Lou Ann and Jim Ellison. Cathy is also survived by a large, devoted family of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, all of whom will carry her memory in their hearts: Jared, Abbie, Brooks, and Bristol Ellison, Cameron, Angie, Cray, and Cale Dockery, Michael, Britni, Ella, and Cooper Veretto, P’Jay, Shelly, Gracey, and Preston Merrell, and Joe, Kyla, Kaydence, and Jace Griffith.
Cathy was a woman who knew how to love deeply, laugh often, and make everyone around her feel special. Her presence will be sorely missed, but her legacy of kindness, humor, and devotion will live on in all who knew her.
