Elizabeth Holder

April 10, 1945 — August 11, 2020

Elizabeth Holder

Elizabeth was a mother, teacher, chaplain and dear friend.  She graduated from Lorenzo High School in 1962 and from Texas Tech University in 1971 where she received a Bachelor of Arts.  She began her teaching career in Lorenzo, but the last 34 years were at Levelland High School where she taught Spanish. She loved teaching teenagers and still kept in close contact with many former students.  Throughout her teaching career, she travelled to many foreign countries with her students to allow them to experience many different cultures.  She also went on seven medical missions to Guatemala where she served as a translator. Elizabeth was also the dedicated Spanish Department Head for over 30 years throughout her teaching career.

After retirement from teaching, she enrolled in the Clinical Pastoral Education Program at Covenant Hospital and had been a chaplain for Interim Hospice in Levelland for ten years and four months.  Elizabeth was the longest serving chaplain until her passing. She went beyond her official duties by purchasing treats and provided personal care for her clients.  She was a member of the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Levelland where she served as an elder and as secretary of the Levelland Ministerial Alliance.  She also served on many other church committees.

Her favorite U.S. destination was Santa Fe. She loved the cultural art scene, cuisine, jewelry, and all around atmosphere.  She was the glue that held friends together by organizing lunches, dinners, birthday parties, movie dates, holiday celebrations, wedding and baby showers. Her love of movies and the theatre originated during childhood as she walked from her father’s general store to the theatre nearby.  Her love for animals was evident, for she rescued strays anywhere she found them. She was concerned with social justice and was an unapologetic liberal.

She is survived by her son, Shawn, brother, Charles Pyles, and her niece, Laura Jane Prokarym (Stan), and grand nephews, Jacob and Drew along with multiple cousins and lifelong friends.

Memorial Services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, August 22, 2020, at The First Evangelical Presbyterian Church.  Due to the Covid19 capacity restrictions at the church, the services will be live streamed on the First Evangelical Presbyterian Church Facebook page.
