Gayla Jean Young (née Kennedy), born June 23, 1956 in Big Spring, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, in Lubbock, Texas. Gayla touched the lives of all who knew her through her kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to those she loved.
Gayla’s life was defined by her deep connections with family. She was a beloved mother to her daughters, Jami Denton of Lindale, TX and Natalie Denton of Levelland, and her sons, Jimmie Denton and Mitch Denton of Levelland, TX . Her 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren were a constant source of pride and joy, and she cherished every moment she spent with them. Gayla is also survived by her brother, Harry and wife Roxie Kennedy, and her sister, Sharon Henson. Her “fur babies” were dear companions, offering her comfort and happiness.
Preceding Gayla in death were her dearly missed husband, Bobby Young, her father, Floyd Kennedy, her mother, Minnie Kennedy, her brothers, Mitch Kennedy and Arlis Kennedy, and her sisters, Laverne Lockheart and Joyce Smyrl. Their memories remained with her always, and their influences shaped the person she was.
Gayla was a loving, caring mother and grandmother. For a good portion of her life she worked in retail management. Her greatest loves were for God, family, her beloved fur babies, and life itself. In her free time she enjoyed crafts and would never pass up a chance to play a game of double nine dominoes. She was also known in part for her great sense of humor. She had a beautiful singing voice and loved to sing her favorite country and western songs. She really enjoyed spending time with family. Mom was our rock and Queen Bee! Gayla was deeply loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed! She was a great mother, grandmother, daughter, and brought joy to every life she touched.
Visitation for Gayla will be held in the Chapel at Krestridge Funeral Home Tuesday, July 14, 2026 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Services for Gayla will be held in the Chapel at Krestridge Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at 2:00 PM followed by a burial in the Meadow Cemetery.
She will be remembered with immense love and profound gratitude by all whose lives she touched.
