Helen Stokes Ellison, 84, formerly of Sundown, passed away on May 24, 2026. Born to Scott and Alma Stokes on April 29, Portales, New Mexico, Helen lived a life filled with faith, family, and service to her community. Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the Sundown Cemetery.

Helen attended Sundown High School and graduated in 1960. She remained in close contact with many of her classmates throughout her life and treasured those deep rooted friendships. Helen also had a lifelong love from the Sundown Roughnecks and remained one of their devoted fans through the years. Following high school, she attended Jessie Lee's Hair Design Institute.

Helen married W.H. Ellison in 1961. They were married for 53 years. Immediately after marrying, W.H. and Helen began their life in Eunice, Louisiana. Over the years, they had the opportunity to live in Fort Morgan, Colorado and Powell, Wyoming before eventually returning home to Texas. Along the way, Helen and W.H. built lasting friendships wherever they lived, gathering dear friends who became family and remained cherished throughout their lives.

Helen worked for the city of Sundown as a librarian and also sold Avon. Her love for books and learning left an indelible mark on those who visited the library. Helen was known for her warm and welcoming nature. She was often one of the first people newcomers met in the community, quickly making them feel at home and becoming fast friends. She never met a stranger and delighted in conversations with everyone she encountered.

A devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Sundown, Helen's faith was central to her life. She expressed her love for the Lord through singing in the church choir and playing the organ during services. Her musical contributions brought joy and inspiration to many within her congregation. Helen also sang in the Sonshine Choir and never passed up an opportunity to share Jesus and encourage others through her faith.

Helen found great joy in reading, cooking, and crafting. She loved hosting parties and holidays for family and friends. She cherished time spent with loved ones and created countless memories around shared meals, games, and stories. Helen's greatest joy was being "Gran" to her grandson, Jayton and Case, and she treasured every moment spent with them.

Helen is survived by her son, Chris Ellison; daughter April Arney and husband Shawn of Bushland; grandsons Jayton Arney of Odessa and Case Arney of Brushland; sisters Elaine Winn of Sundown and Nola Jennings of Lubbock; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Scott and Alma Stokes; her husband, W.H. Ellison; her sister, Myrna Schulein; and her brother, Vernon Stokes.

Helen's legacy is one of kindness, faithfulness, music, hospitality, and a deep love for others. She will be remembered for her welcoming spirit, unwavering faith, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
