Helen “Sue” Norman Nelson of Levelland, Texas died on October 16, 2023, at home surrounded by family. She was 86 years, 9 months old. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, October 20, 2023, in the Krestridge Funeral Home Chapel.
Daughter of the late Alton Benton Norman and Vera Lee (Taylor) Norman, Sue was born on January 20, 1937, in Lynn, Texas. She moved to Levelland with her family when she was in grade school and grew up on Cactus Drive where her father operated Norman’s Studio. Sue married Billy Wayne Thomas on December 11, 1954, in Garza, Texas. They had three daughters together. On August 14, 1968, she married William Chester Nelson in Center Point, Texas.
Sue Nelson was a hard worker, who always put her family first, and spent much of her adult life as a caregiver. Known for her compassion and thoughtfulness, she was the primary caregiver for her second husband until his death in 1985. Then she nursed her mother at home the last two decades of her life, refusing to place her in an institution when she got Alzheimer’s. Known as Granny to her grandchildren and great grandchildren, she is well remembered for her big heart, quick wit and ability to find humor in all situations. Granny is remembered for her zest for life, humor, creativity, steadfastness, and most importantly her dedication to family.
Survivors include a brother: Alton B Norman, Jr., of Lubbock, Texas; three daughters: Kitti Williams and husband Ricky of Petersburg, North Dakota, Patti Osborn and husband Ray of Levelland Texas, and Debbi Thomas of Fredericksburg, Texas. She has eight grandchildren: Tanner Osborn and wife Audra of Lubbock, Texas, Angie Straface and husband Chris of Lubbock, Texas, Amanda Thomas of Fredericksburg, Texas, Chelsea Shows of Madisonville, Texas, Tiffany Breding and husband Matt of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Michael Williams and wife Michelle of Abilene, Texas, Robbie Williams of Fargo, North Dakota and Stephanie Williams of Aneta, North Dakota; and sixteen great-grandchildren: Jonathan, Abbie, Jackson and Avonlea Osborn of Lubbock, Texas, Ian and Riley Straface of Lubbock, Texas, Michael and Jacob DeLoof of Fredericksburg, Texas, Mackenzie and Alex Shows of Madisonville, Texas, Aspin Wilson of Mayville, North Dakota, Taylor Wilson of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Karjmella Williams of Argyle, Minnesota, Connor and Emma Williams of Abilene, Texas, Madison Williams of Grand Forks, North Dakota and Caiden Lopez.
Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers J.D. Norman and Frankie Lee Norman, and a sister, Billie June Atchison.
