Homer Guy McLean

Homer Guy McLean Jr., 92, of Levelland passed from this life on December 17, 2023.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Krestridge Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church.  Interment will follow in the City of Levelland Cemetery.

 

He was born February 21, 1931 in Luling, Texas to Homer Guy McLean Sr. and Lillie Nell (Chambers) McLean.  Homer graduated high school in Cuero. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1954.

 

In April of 1950, Homer met Shirley Nell Stroh at a country dance hall.  They started going together shortly after meeting until Homer enlisted in the Navy, and then they wrote lots of letters.  They were married on September 19, 1954 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Karnes City. 

 

Shortly after their marriage, Homer started classes at Southwest Texas State University from 1954 until 1958.  During the summers of 1958 through 1968 and the year 1969, Homer attended the following: Stephen F. Austin State, Sam Houston State, West Texas State, Texas A&M, The University of Arkansas, Walla Walla College, Bradley University and the University of Illinois. Homer received a Bachelor of Science degree in math and physics from Southwest Texas State.  He received his Masters Degree from West Texas State in math and physics.  Homer received a second graduate degree from the University of Illinois in electrical engineering with a specialty in solid state and circuit design. 

 

Homer taught math and physics at Cuero High School from January 1958 until May 1962.  In August 1962, he finished his Masters Degree and with a few good recommendations, Homer started teaching physics and math at South Plains College in Levelland.  He retired after teaching physics at South Plains College for 32 years in Levelland.  During their retirement years, Homer and Shirley took some great trips, but never international ones.  They spent time in all except 2 of the Canadian provinces. 

 

He was a life-long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church.

 

Homer was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a brother and a sister.

 

He is survived by his sons, Brian McLean and Randy McLean of Levelland; daughters, Brenda (Dana) Hanna of Lubbock and Adalyn McLean of Levelland; brother, Jimmy McLean; grandchildren, Amber (Carlos) McLean, Amanda (Chris) McLean, Abagail Nell (Jacob) Gunn, Amy McLean, Aja (Dwayn) Matthies, Dana (Lisa) Hanna, Raymond Hanna, Daniel (Ayanna) McLean, Richard McLean and Sarah (Chris) Nicholson; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Elizabeth Claire, Allegra Lillian-Nell, Deja, Tavish, Caelan, Everett, Finnley and Samantha Emmalyne; and sister in law, Dorothy Gross.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Homer’s name be made to the South Plains College Science Department.
