Jeff Northern: A Life Devoted to Family & Education
Jeff Northern, a dedicated family man and lifetime educator, passed away on August 1st, 2024, at the age of 55. Known for his unwavering commitment to his family and friends, and his deep sense of humor, Jeff leaves behind a legacy that will resonate through the countless lives he touched. He is survived by his beloved wife, Laura; his son Taylor and daughter-in-law Ashley Northern, and their four children, Blakeley, Brecken, Brynley and Beau; his daughter Shelby and son-in-law Sam Schwerzenbach; his mother, Sandra Davis; his sister Debbie and brother-in-law Bobby Southerland; and many nieces and nephews. Jeff was predeceased by his father, Gary Northern, who passed away in 2018.
Born on August 22, 1968, in Lubbock, TX, Jeff's journey into the realm of education began in his early 20’s. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from Texas Tech University in 1991, Jeff began his career as a coach and history teacher at Levelland ISD. In 2002 he completed a Master of Science in Educational Administration with a Superintendent Certification from Lubbock Christian University. Jeff dedicated over 30 years of his life to the field, ascending from a classroom teacher and coach to the role of school superintendent, serving Levelland ISD, Follet ISD and Snyder ISD. His tenure was marked by innovative programs and initiatives aimed at fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment for students and staff alike.
Jeff was not only an administrator but also a passionate advocate for the holistic development of young minds, particularly for young men. He believed that education extended beyond textbooks in the classroom; it encompassed character building, resilience, and mentorship. His deep commitment to guiding young men was evident throughout his life and career, where he instilled values of true grit, responsibility, and leadership.
His influence extended beyond the classroom and into the community. Jeff was a familiar face at local events, sports games, and school board meetings, where his warm smile and genuine interest in others made him a beloved figure. He listened intently to parents’ concerns and took every opportunity to connect with students, often inviting them to share their dreams and aspirations. Many remember him as the man who would go out of his way to encourage a shy student or celebrate the achievements of every child, no matter how small.
Jeff's dedication to family mirrored his professional life. He adored his wife and lifetime best friend, Laura, with whom he shared a covenant relationship built on love, respect, laughter and family values. Together, they created a nurturing home where laughter and learning thrived. He was a devoted father to Taylor and Shelby, teaching them the importance of compassion and hard work. As a grandfather, he embraced his role as “Crawdad” with an extraordinary and unprecedented enthusiasm, reveling in the joy of storytelling, fishing trips, and everyday life with his four grandchildren. Jeff loved to fish and vowed to catch the last fish at Lake Stamford. He will always be remembered as “King of the Creek.” He was the life of the party and filled every room he entered with a larger-than-life energy.
In the wake of his passing, those who knew Jeff are left with the profound sense of loss but also the inspiration to carry on his legacy. His dedication to family, friends, education, mentorship, and community will continue to shape future generations, as he encouraged countless individuals to strive for greatness, both in their personal lives and in their contributions to society.
