Judy Mozelle
Bryant
July 1, 1946 – March 25, 2026
Judith (“Judy”) Woodlock Bryant (79) was born on July 1, 1946, in Abilene, Texas to Clinton Woodlock and Mozelle Sosebee Woodlock. She was welcomed peacefully into the arms of our Heavenly Father on March 25, 2026.
After she was born, the family returned to Lubbock, Texas where, along with her siblings, she enjoyed a wonderful adolescence. In the fall of 1962, they moved to Odessa, Texas where she attended and graduated from Permian High School. She went on to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Sul Ross University. Upon graduation from Sul Ross, Judy acquired a position teaching in the Physical Education department at South Plains College (“SPC”) in Levelland, Texas and concurrently earned her Masters of Education from Texas Tech University.
Shortly after moving to Levelland, she met Butch Bryant, and they were married on December 21, 1968. They spent 56 wonderful years together in Levelland before his passing in 2025. Judy and Butch raised their only son, Scott Bryant, whom Judy always referred to so affectionately as her “MOB” (Momma’s Only Baby). She was immensely proud of her MOB, and no one brought more pride and joy to her heart than he did. Judy was the steadfast rock, constant cheerleader, and unwavering driving force behind Butch, and then Scott, as they built Butch’s Rathole and Anchor Service into the success that it is today. Watching the Company grow and thrive and seeing those white, red, and black Butch’s trucks on the highway brought such a sense of pride for the men she loved most. Becoming a grandmother and then a great grandmother filled her cup to overflowing.
Judy’s esteemed career at South Plains College spanned 43 years, and she retired as a full professor and chairperson of the Physical Education Department. Judy’s tenure at SPC included, among many things, instruction in archery, bowling, racquetball, weightlifting, and pickleball. She was the basketball coach of the first women’s basketball team at SPC and also served as the Texan cheerleading sponsor. Her many accolades included being named recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award and Phi Theta Kappa Teacher of the Year Award. Judy was instrumental in the concept, creation, and design of the SPC Fitness Center. Her devotion to SPC continued long past her retirement, as she created the Judy Bryant Scholarship Endowment in 2011. She was later inducted into the South Plains Texan Hall of Fame, and she and Butch were named recipients of the prestigious Pacesetter award in 2014 for their unwavering support of SPC. For over a decade, she served tirelessly on the Board of the South Plains College Foundation. One of her most proud days was the opening of the Judy Bryant Outdoor Fitness Court in 2024, a state-of-the-art fitness area, open to the public and SPC students to help garner the love that Judy had for personal fitness. Teaching shaped her life, and she in turn shaped the young lives of countless students, many of whom often went out of their way to express to her just how much she meant to their college experience.
Judy was the epitome of class and timeless elegance. She had such a way with people. Her kindness, grace, and even-tempered personality defined her beautiful soul. She had many life-long friends whom she adored “doing life” with. Her friends, cousins, and siblings were so very close to her, and so many of her best times were spent with them. They loved taking trips to her family cabin in Ruidoso and their place at Lake Brownwood, where they made abundant lasting memories. The photo wall at her lake house tells the story of a life well lived.
Judy is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Butch Bryant; and brother, Brad Woodlock. Remaining to cherish her memory are her son, Scott Bryant, and his wife, Jaime of Lubbock, Texas; grandchildren, Alec Conkin and wife, Lauren of Lubbock, Tucker Byrant of Midland, Texas, Rylan Bryant of Lubbock, Jack Bryant of Midland; great grandson, Corbyn Conkin; two sisters, Lana Woodlock of Lubbock, Susan Woodlock Smithson and husband, Bob of Lubbock; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.
The lasting impact Judy has left on the lives of all of those who had the honor of knowing her will be cherished for years to come. She loved fiercely, gave of her time freely, and enjoyed life with her people. She will forever be a shining example of what it meant to be a strong woman and to live with grace. We know she is in Heaven, a body whole again, still watching over her community, family, and friends.
Scott and Jaime would like to extend a special thank you to Judy’s dear friends and family and to Carla Bordelon and all of the healthcare team who tirelessly made sure that she was comfortable, loved, cared for, and able to remain happily in the comfort of her own home during her golden years.
