Lorna Kathleen Wilkins-Williams

Lorna Kathleen Wilkins-Williams, 35, of Levelland, Texas graduated to be with her Lord and Savior on August 30, 2023.  Ms. Wilkins’ memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at First Baptist Church (219 W. Main Street) in Brownfield, Texas with Dr. Gionet Cooper officiating.  The family requests visitors wear happy, bright, colorful clothing in celebration of Ms. Wilkins’ life.

Lorna was born to Donald Richmon Williams and Vicky Fay Wilkins-Williams in Lubbock, Texas on March 24, 1988.  Her family lived in multiple places in Texas until they moved to Levelland, Texas when she was in elementary school.  She graduated from Levelland High School in 2006.  She then continued her education at Lubbock Christian University where she earned her B.A. in English with a minor in history and then she earned her M.A. in Secondary Education.  Ms. Wilkins accomplished this while sometimes working four jobs while attending school.  After beginning her teaching career, Ms. Wilkins became a dedicated member of the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge #76 in Lubbock, Texas, and she was very proud of her association with her sisters of Eastern Star.  Her paternal grandfather was a 32nd degree Mason and her maternal grandfather was a 32nd degree Mason as well as a Shriner.

Ms. Wilkins was passionate about many things, especially those she considered her family which went much further than her genetic family.  She was fiercely loyal to and protective of those she cared about deeply.  Ms. Wilkins was tireless about kids getting an education, no matter how many hours and effort it took.  Learning, art, all kinds of music, reading and a gift for languages were all passions of Ms. Wilkins.

Being a high school English teacher was Ms. Wilkins’ destiny.  She made literature come to life.  She had the ability to turn kids on to literature, understanding the written word and even on to writing.  She made difficult passages simple and understandable.  Ms. Wilkins gave respect, but she also received respect from her students by recognizing them for the awesome adults they were becoming.  She always had an encouraging word for everyone whether student, parent, co-worker, etc.  Being a team player was important and she was an excellent role model.  Her passion for teaching showed in everything she did and with her actions.  She was known for “checking in” on her kids and families.

Ms. Wilkins was preceded in heavenly graduation by her dad, Donald R. Williams, her Grandpa Hollis Shewmake, Sr. and by both sets of her maternal and paternal grandparents.  She is survived by her mother, Vicky Wilkins-Williams; Granny Annabelle Shewmake; and her siblings, Stephen Cameron, April Dunlap, Angela Cameron, Amanda Richards, and Christopher Portwood.  Lorna adored her nieces, Katrina Cameron, Hope Cameron and Amanda Cameron.  Her uncles, Glen Gardner, Til Bill Robinson, Randy Shewmake and David Longoria were her compatriots in hijinks, learning of all kinds, and “cool rides”.  She is also survived by a myriad of students that she always considered family.

Lorna will be greatly missed by her mother, sisters, brothers, nieces and uncles, but also by her Brownfield ISD family.  She was a beloved daughter, a fun companion and a true friend.  Her smile was infectious, and had a delightful sense of humor, a great laugh and a witty personality.  Lorna will be greatly missed by many.
