Martha Joan Van Zandt

Martha Joan Van Zandt, 93, of Levelland, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 23, 2026.

Martha was born on November 5, 1932, in Springer, New Mexico, to Livinus De Smet and Clara Ferfes. She grew up on a ranch in Miami, New Mexico, as one of eight children. On June 3, 1951, Martha married Emil Lee “E.L.” Van Zandt in Clovis, New Mexico. Together, they eventually made their home in Levelland, Texas, where they built a life centered around family. Those who knew Martha will remember her as a bright light with a spirited sense of humor that found its way into all of her stories of family, friendships, and the many experiences that shaped her life. Whether recounting a memory from years ago or simply making those around her laugh, Martha had a way of leaving people with something to remember.

Martha was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Emil Lee “E.L.” Van Zandt.

She is survived by her four children: Mike Van Zandt of Levelland, Texas; Eddie Van Zandt of Levelland, Texas; Tammy Alford of Gilmer, Texas; and Michele Van Zandt of Lubbock, Texas; her eight grandchildren, Michael Van Zandt, Justin Van Zandt, Shane Van Zandt, Cody Van Zandt, Kasey Van Zandt, Elizabeth Hamm, Scotty Van Zandt, and Victoria McBride; and 21 great-grandchildren.
