Obituary

Mitchell Lane Jackson, 73, formerly of Odessa, left this world on May 30, 2026, while recovering from a brain injury after a fall. He passed away at his nursing facility in Lubbock.

Mitch was born on January 29,1953 in Hobbs, New Mexico, as the second of four sons to Wayne Jackson and Bobba Lea Eidson Jackson. He grew up full of energy, mischief, humor, and joy. As a kid, he enjoyed playing with his brothers and neighborhood friends, and spending summers in Raton with his grandparents at their family business, the Sunset Motel. The family moved to Odessa when Mitch was in eighth grade, and he resided in Odessa throughout his life. He attended Odessa High School where he graduated in 1971. He made many wonderful friends for life from his school days, including the love of his life, Valerie.

Mitch married Valerie Ann Reed on December 15, 1973 at Grace Baptist Church in Odessa. They loved each other faithfully for almost 52 years until her death. Their marriage was evidence of committed love, times of laughter and sadness, forgiveness, and taking turns caring for each other.

The couple had three children. As a dad, Mitch made sure his kids knew he would always be there for them. He taught them how to be silly, how to work hard, and to put their faith in God. As a music enthusiast, Mitch played hours of songs for the kids, making them guess the artists, especially 60s and 70s rock. He loved being “Poppa” to his grandkids, was known to join in Nerf battles or to provide snow cones and other treats from the cooler he kept in his truck. Mitch enjoyed family time with his parents, brothers, and extended family, especially at holidays and family fish fry nights. He loved the food, music, laughs, and was usually in the middle of the antics.

Professionally, Mitch spent his career as a Wireline Operator in the oil fields of the Permian Basin. For many years, he worked alongside his dad and brothers in Odessa at the family business, Kuykendall Electric Wireline Service Company. He continued in the field once the company was bought by Gray Wireline, and most recently, worked alongside his son and brother Mike at Renegade Wireline in Andrews. Mitch enjoyed the Gray family and held them in the highest esteem.

Whether family or friend, you could count on Mitch in times of trouble. While he had his own personal struggles with addiction, he never judged others, and was willing to lend a hand, just like the lyrics of one of his favorite James Taylor songs:

“When you’re down and troubled and you need a helping hand, and nothing is going right, close your eyes and think of me and soon I will be there to brighten up even your darkest nights. You just call out my name and you know wherever I am I’ll come running to see you again. Winter, Spring, Summer, or Fall, all you’ve got to do is call and I’ll be there…you’ve got a friend.”

While we deeply grieve his loss, we know we will see him again in Heaven, as he trusted in Jesus Christ as his Savior.

Mitch is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Valerie, his parents, and his brothers Monte Jackson and Matt Jackson.

Mitch is survived by two daughters, Raynie Brooke Gibbs and husband Ryan of Levelland, Texas, and Lacie Layne Freeman of Odessa; one son, Joseph Mitchell Jackson and wife Lissi of Odessa; older brother Mike Jackson and wife Barbara of Odessa; brother-in-law “Tommy” Zackie Thomas Reed, III and wife Mary of Knox City, Texas; and eight grandchildren Dylan Mitchell, Gabriel Thomas, Rhiannon Brooke, Graham Ryan, Grayson Owen, Jethro Lane, Jericho Wayne, and Jrue Mark. He is also survived by aunts and uncles, loving cousins, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and many precious friends.
