Nancy Carol Burelsmith Smith, a cherished mother, devoted wife, and faithful friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 84, surrounded by her loving family.
Nancy was born January 2, 1941, in Wilbarger County, Texas, to Emmitt Bernist Burelsmith (1918–1991) and Helen Ruth (Hardage) Burelsmith (1921–1999). She was part of a family with deep West Texas roots—the Burelsmiths, originally from Vernon, moved to the South Plains in the mid-20th century as part of the wave of agricultural families seeking opportunity in the region’s growing cotton industry.
Nancy spent her early years in Wilbarger County before moving to Levelland with her family in the post–World War II era, when the town was emerging as a regional hub. She attended Levelland public schools, graduating during the community’s period of rapid growth in the 1950s.
In 1959, she married Glen Dale Smith, linking two longstanding local families. Except for a short period in Germany while Glen served in the U.S. Army, they made Levelland their lifelong home.
Nancy’s life was anchored in faith, family, and service. She became a member of First Baptist Church of Levelland in 1952 and remained active in Sunday school and church life for more than 70 years. She also served the community in practical ways, working over two decades in administrative roles with the Levelland Independent School District.
Her marriage to Glen in 1959 was a true partnership—together they raised four children and worked side by side through the seasonal demands of farming and the cycles of the oil field. Nancy managed the home front during harvest, helped with bookkeeping, and offered the quiet, steady leadership that kept the family moving forward.
She was deeply woven into the fabric of Levelland life—sharing stories of its history, celebrating its milestones, and faithfully sending hundreds of birthday cards each year to friends and neighbors. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her greatest joy, and she filled their lives with stories, laughter, and lessons in resilience, kindness, and faith.
Nancy is survived by her husband of 66 years, Glen Dale Smith; her children Rodney Smith (Kim), Julie Polk (Jimmy), Terry Smith (Yvonne), and Billy Smith (Mindy); 11 grandchildren—Kendra Clark of Lubbock, Lauren Smith of New York, NY, Hunter Smith of Fort Worth, Charley Harley of Lubbock, Billy Harley of Lubbock, Jeremy Polk of Rockwall, and Megan Johnson of Levelland, Easton Smith of Lubbock, Daphne Smith of San Antonio, Alexus Smith of Corpus Christi, Landon Morgan of Pampa,—along with 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be held from 5:00- 7:00 pm on Tuesday, August 12,2025 at Krestridge Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating Nancy’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13 at First Baptist Church, Levelland. Her legacy of love, faith, and community will live on in the many lives she touched.
