Robert Shean Abston, 53, of Morton passed from this life on January 15, 2024. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 22, 2024, in the Krestridge Funeral Home Chapel.
Robert Shean Abston was born on November 11, 1970, at 12:18 pm at Methodist Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. He began his childhood education in Lubbock before starting school in Smyer, Texas, where he graduated high school in 1989. Shean wore various occupation hats, from house painting to being a cook. He briefly studied at South Plains College before receiving his bachelor’s degree from Lubbock Christian University in 2004 as Magna Cum Laude. “Coach” Abston started his coaching and teaching career at Southland ISD. Afterward, he worked at Shepherd ISD, Wilson ISD, and Roosevelt ISD. He continued his career at Morton, ISD where he met and married the love of his life, Luisa Martinez. At this district, he reached a career goal of becoming Athletic Director and led the first six-man team in school history to win the Inaugural Six Man Independent Bowl Series State Championship. Leaving Morton in 2020, “Coach” continued teaching and coaching at Lorenzo ISD and Lazbuddie ISD. In 2023, he came to Denver City ISD, where he would complete his memorable career.
Shean is remembered to have loved and excelled at all things sports throughout his life. Shean was a great cook who grilled a mean steak. He loved his Granny, was sweet to his Momma, and was his Daddy’s best bud.
Robert Shean “Coach” Abston was loved by all. He impacted countless students’ lives and was remembered by them as a coach who cared more for his players rather than the wins or losses of a program.
He was our Son, Grandson, Brother, Uncle, Nephew, Dad, Husband and Coach.
Shean was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Carl Edward and Edith Wanda Abston; maternal grandparents, Robert and Jean Fae Arnold Pearson and grandfathers, Finis Ray Phy and Bill Burgess.
Those left to honor and cherish his memory include his parents, Rick and Debbie Pearson Abston; wife, Luisa Martinez Abston; children, RJ Maldonado, Kelsea Abston, Jesus and Melody Cruz, Elijah Abston, Alison Abston, Zackery DeLeon and Noa DeLeon; brother, Finis Wayne Phy and grandmother, JoAnn Winkle Phy.
