Robert M. Pearce, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and educator, passed away on June 16, 2024. Born on March 23, 1937, in Lucas, Texas, Robert lived a life dedicated to service and education.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Joy H. Pearce; his children, Mitchell Pearce (Jacque) and Adrienne Lambert (Scott); his grandchildren, Rachel M. Pearce, Halle Parham, and Pearce Lambert; and his great-granddaughter, Eleanor Parham. He is also survived by his sister, Carroll Johnson. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, James Z. Pearce and Lillian Graves Pearce, and his siblings, Jimmie Powell, C. Jack Pearce, and Joseph Pearce.
Robert's passion for teaching and mathematics was evident throughout his life. He devoted 40 years of his career to South Plains College (SPC), making him the longest-tenured teacher in the institution’s history, at the time. Serving as the chairperson of the Math and Engineering Department for 30 years, he influenced thousands of students who have gone on to successful careers in engineering, mathematics, and education.
Robert graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas in 1955. After his family moved to Amarillo, he attended Amarillo College and graduated from West Texas State University in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He later earned a Master of Science degree in education from Texas Tech University.
Robert began his teaching career at Levelland High School and later taught in Eunice, New Mexico. In 1965, he joined South Plains College. While there he attended National Science Foundation institutes at San Jose State, the University of North Carolina, the University of Houston, and Vermont. That enabled him to bring innovative methods such as videotaping lectures for students to review to South Plains College. This initiative was one of the first of its kind in the nation and demonstrated Robert's commitment to enhancing student learning.
In addition to his teaching, Robert was actively involved in extracurricular activities. He coached the SPC baseball team from 1967 to 1969. He also participated in officiating and supporting various sports events, including basketball games, track meets, and UIL contests.
Robert's dedication extended beyond the classroom to his church community. He and a friend initiated a bus ministry for children, providing transportation to and from church, which they continued for over twenty years. He also taught Sunday School for college students and was the faculty representative to the Baptist Student Center for years.
Robert’s impact on students is best captured by the many who remember his guidance and support. A former student recalls Robert’s enduring advice: “Get the job done.” In recognition of his contributions, a street at South Plains College was temporarily named Robert Pearce Place in 2021.
Robert's love for teaching and his students was matched by his devotion to his family. He taught his children to play various sports and was always supportive of their endeavors. In his later years, he found joy in geocaching and satellite recovery adventures.
Robert lived a life of service, expressed through the church and education. The people of First Presbyterian Church have been a source of joy, inspiration, and comfort to our family.
A celebration of Robert's life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Friday, June 21.2024 at 2:00 pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the First Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice.
